What is Mario's Hammer?

Mario's Hammer refers to the Original Donkey Kong video game. In the game you are plumber Mario trying to save your girlfriend from the big ape, Donkey Kong. You journey up a series of levels while jumping rolling barrels. During your ascension you have the opportunity to grab a hammer in which to smash the barrels. Now the hammer is something you think you want but once you get it you find it hard to get rid of it. And while you're holding it you can't climb the ladder. I found that when I got the hammer it would disappear at the wrong time and I'd get smashed by a barrel.

So I'm using "Mario's Hammer" to refer to something you thought you wanted but once you get it you find you can't get rid of it fast enough!
